nXr aim
Current reference managers support you to collect and annotate research papers, make citations in your research manuscripts and make a reference list.
These reference managers don’t have any features which support users to make accurate citations or referencing (e.g., no quotation or citation errors). Moreover, they don’t provide any means whatsoever to check whether the claims in the manuscript that were proposed with citations are accurately supported by the references.

Therefore, the most crucial aspects of referencing (accurate citations for writing well-substantiated research manuscripts and checking the references to validate the claims) are solely left to the manuscript authors’ and reviewers’ discretion.
Due to the lack of support and time, good citation/referencing practices during the writing and checking the references during the assessment/peer-review are ignored. This may cause various citation malpractices and a high rate of quotation/citation errors, which overall results in poor quality of scientific/research endeavours.
In this circumstance, nXr aims to provide the missing support so that students/scientists/researchers can make accurate citations and share them with reviewers for validation resulting in better science.
nXr strategy to achieve the aim
Users as authors or reviewers of a manuscript do some tasks of similar nature while writing or reviewing the manuscript (see the image below).
The similarity of the tasks and sharability of their outcome establishes nXr strategy or hypothesis:
More productivity – for writing well-substantiated research manuscripts and accelerating their assessment or peer-review – can be achieved from these tasks by enabling accurate informative citations and sharing the output of the common tasks (e.g., informative citations) with the reviewers.
nXr uses an integration of three modules (nXr.iNote, nXr.iLibrary and nXr.iCite; see the image below) to derive the following productivity to enable better research:
- Writing well-substantiated research manuscript with accurate and informative citations which contain:
- cited quotes/images/information
- quote/information page number
- citation intent (i.e., the reason for making the citation)
- article URLs and PDFs
- a declaration on the quality of the citations
- manuscript reference dashboard
- Sharing the informative citations with the reviewers to accelerate the assessment/review of the manuscript by enabling validation of the citations side by side with the manuscript or through the dashboard.
